The last stand. Will Commander Shepard triumph over the Reapers or will they consume every living being in the Galaxy?
Mass Effect 3 was developed by Bioware and published by EA. It is the last game in the Mass Effect Trilogy which mixes third person shooting with some RPG elements. I’m really surprised my PC can handle this game, I run an AMD with a 2.1 ghz i7 and it still manages to run pretty good with some frames being stretched sometimes. I also played this immediately after finishing the 2nd game and was pretty excited for what’s going to happen in the story. Now, I knew the ending sucked beforehand so my expectations are quite tempered.
Narrative
Since the Reaper’s are at the doorstep aiming to annihilate most species in the Galaxy, the atmosphere is very different from the first two games. In this one everyone is afraid and preparing for imminent assaults that might end their lives or even the galaxy. Small squabbles and disputes are put to the side to focus on the Reaper threat.
Earth has already fallen to the Reapers, left with only small pockets of resistance forces desperately fighting for the freedom of their planet. It’s up to Commander Shepard to amass an army capable of fighting the Reapers in space and ground combat and to unlock the secrets of a weapon capable of stopping them.
I really liked the story of 3, the stakes are really high and it gives you a sense of urgency.
World
Most of the galaxy is free to travel, some are closed off due to them being a major part of the story. You can scan the different planets for quests or resources that will help you along your journey, be careful though as scanning too much in certain areas will gain you the attention of nearby reapers who will chase you around, resulting in a game over if they manage to catch you.
Again, the choices you made in the previous games may influence the world.
Gameplay
Taking hints from Mass Effect 2, there are quite a lot of improvements for this game, the weapons you can buy are much more unique, they all fire differently despite being in the same class of weapons. Combat is more active, the powers can influence the outcome very well and you will find yourself chaining them together to maximize their effect. The various armor also look pretty cool, and they improve your stats differently.
Verdict
There’s not really much to say about 3, other than they’ve learned a lot from the previous games and integrated it into this one. This might be the best Mass Effect game out there despite its incredibly disappointing ending. It’s the last one of the original trilogy and Bioware made it special, memorable even. I highly recommend playing all of the three games, keeping everyone alive and doing the Citadel DLC for this one, you’ll know what I mean by then.
Interesting game.
Good narrative, I like it, Good article too.
