Before the start of this tournament, everyone expects Secret to secure a Playoff spot themselves as they still have two series left to play. But since they are still playing consistently well without any changes, it is better to leave them out of this discussion.
Liquid is great again
Even though Liquid lost their first two series against Ninjas in Pyjamas and Alliance, the horsemen bounced back by taking down Nigma in a 61-minute game 3 and convincingly won the series against Secret. To cap off their series in the Groups, Team Liquid swept both OG and OG.Seed for a 4-2 series record with 9 wins and 6 losses.
I’ve been watching Liquid’s games since the ESL LA Online Leagues and even though it was a painful run, I saw Liquid win most of their games once it eclipsed the late game around 40 to 50 minutes. However, teams exploited their drafts and beat them around the mid game.
Now, Liquid has finally played to their strengths and improved their synergy as they drafted more teamfight-heavy drafts compared to the farming for late game heroes. Not only that, their drafts finally allowed them to close out their games even before the 40-minute mark.
Along with the new patch, Liquid have massively improved and showed how their years of team synergy gives them the needed edge in securing a spot in the Groups.
[A]ll in for the Playoffs
With one more series left against Nigma, Alliance will either take the first seed or just follow Liquid as the second seed. In this tournament, Alliance proved themselves to be dominant as their only loss was against Secret. They won after three games against Liquid, OG, and OG.Seed, while they quickly swept NiP.
With S4 taking the wheel, Alliance certainly has improved their decision-making as well as give Nikobaby carry heroes that work well during this patch. Because of this, they were able to finish most of their games under 30 minutes, while their victories exceeding that duration was action-packed and well-earned.
Another contributing factor to this team’s performance is Fng standing-in for them. In fact, he averaged 13 assists over their 13 games played and recorded his highest assists for the team at 23 during their game 3 against OG.
With S4 and Fng leading the way, the rest of Alliance also performing at the same levels as them. Because of the versatility and leadership brought by these two, Alliance will certainly put on a show in the Playoffs.
Heading into Playoffs, we expected OG and Nigma to be the ones at the top with Secret, but with both teams struggling at the moment, Alliance and Liquid showed up big time to prove that they belong in the top tiers of Europe.
